Southampton: Bounty overhaul a disaster!

The arrival of the Lunenberg reconstruction of Bounty made for the 1962 Brando/Howard Mutiny on the Bounty in England took me to Southampton on Tuesday, 18 September.

Upon taking first view of the ship I knew there was something wrong. The ship has been used in the Pirate of the Caribbean films and has been disaterously changed to the point the the only way you would know it was Bounty would be by the stern and the figurehead. All else has been changed.

What guns exist are in the wrong place. There no longer any swivel guns. The deck housings are altered. The ship is painted green, a colour never used by the Royal Navy in the 18th Century. The bow has lost all it's glorious lines. The side cabin windows now have tin on their roofs instread of wood, The gunwales are wrong. The traditional 'fisherman's' Anchors have been replaced by modern 'Naval' Anchors The yards are a black wash. In short Bounty has been converted to a Disney production of a pirate ship and has lost any historical fidelity and beauty of the original 18th century ship of the Royal Navy.

It would be like changing the guns on HMS Victory and painting it red, in short a travesty.

The Bounty is gone.

It must have been heartbreaking to see the disaster that was the Bounty. How sad there was no respect for her history.
